Delta State Government Assures Of Continued Support To Local Governments

The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its unflinching support to the 25 (twenty five) Local Government Areas of the State.

This reassurance was given by the Commissioner for Finance, Sir Fidelis Tilije, during a Ministerial Briefing Session organized for the Participants of Senior Executive Course (SEC) 44, 2022 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kurur, Jos.

The Commissioner was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Cornelius Semiteje.

In his presentation, which was tagged “Funding of Local Government in the State and how it has impacted on Governance in Nigeria, the Finance Commissioner mentioned that the Local Governments are saddled with the responsibility of paying Primary School teachers which takes a huge sum of their revenue thereby leaving them with virtually nothing else for developmental projects.

The State Government as a result renders support to enable the Local Governments progress.

Sir Tilije said that it is the local Governments that form the State and as such are important aspects which cannot be ignored, hence the Delta State Government assists Local Governments as much as possible.

He mentioned that the State has put necessary measures in place to ensure that the activities of the Local Governments are well handled.

The Finance Commissioner stated that funding of Local Governments enables them pay salaries promptly and also embark on people oriented programs.

The leader of the team, Prof O. J. Para – Mallam explained that the reason for their visit is to study the Local Governments, their functionality, funding and challenges as the theme of their tour is “Strengthening Local Governance in Nigeria.
