Tuoyo Flags Off Net Distribution In Warri South West, Charges Officials On Effectiveness

By Ebiakpo Obanyedo

The Chairman of Warri South West Local Government Council, Hon. Oritsematosan Tuoyo, yesterday flagged off and launched the Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) Distribution Campaign at the council secretariat, Ogbe – Ijoh, with the slogan “Take cover from mosquitoes that spread malaria, sleep inside the Net”.

The chairman appreciated the Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and other partners for their magnanimous provision of the insecticide treated nets for the people.

He urged all health workers who will be distributing the nets and the recipients to ensure the proper and effective deployment and use of the nets so as to reap the maximum benefits in terms of the promotion of good, excellent health care for the people of Warri South West Local Government.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Emiko Ofuyaekpome, the Executive Secretary of Public Health Care Authority (PHCA) said the programme had started two weeks ago with the training of health workers on the distribution of the nets.

He said that the campaign/distribution started 2nd June and will end on the 13th of June, 2022 with the door to door distribution method.

Mr Ejiro Orefia, who is the State Representative of Management Sciences for Health (MSH) emphasized the usefulness of the nets to the young children, pregnant women and the elderly to avoid more deaths from malaria, bearing in mind that most of the communities in Warri South West were riverine.

Also Speaking, Miss Favour Chiebuka, also State Representative of Management Sciences for Health (MSH), appealed to all stakeholders to embrace the campaign to reduce the death rate caused by malaria.

The Health Educator in Warri South West Local Government Area, Mrs Happy Nyowhoma educated the people on the proper use of the mosquitoes nets, saying that the nets should be spread outside under a shade and not under the sun for 24 hours so as to allow air to go through it to reduce the effects of the insecticide.

Speaking further, she said the nets should be tied to four sticks on the sides of a bed and spread the net over the sticks down to the bed and tuck it properly, adding that the nets should not be washed with harsh detergents or soap.

High lights of the occasion were the Chairman of the Council Hon. Tuoyo who demonstrated the use of the net by lying down on a bed, covered with the mosquito net and the decoration of Mrs Maudlin Tuoyo, wife of the council chairman as the next advocate for the long lasting net crusade in Warri South West.

In her brief speech, Mrs Maudlin Tuoyo called on all traditional rulers, politicians, civil servants, sons and daughters to support her in her crusade against malaria and to bring it to zero level in the state.
